When creating or maintaining a beautiful lawn, it’s much like our bodies.  Three very important things need to work together to have the best opportunity at a thick, beautiful, green lawn.

1. Water – I put water first, because without proper water scheduling, and coverage, nothing else works.  Great fertilizer without water will do nothing.  Aeration without water, is a waste of time.  So the first step in creating a beautiful lawn is to have the best possible sprinkler coverage your system can achieve, a sprinkler program that will promote a deep watering every time, and promote deeper root penetration over the years.  We live in a high desert here in Denver, and the surrounding suburbs, so regularly applied, efficient water is a necessity to keep a beautiful lawn or landscape.
2. Food – With proper irrigation in place, now is the time to plan out a regular feeding program for your lawn.  You eat on a regular schedule, and your lawn would like the same treatment.  Colorado’s Front Range soils are extremely nutrient deficient, so REGULAR feeding of these important nutrients, and micro nutrients is very important.  Getting on a minimum of a 4 application per season fertilizer program is a necessity if you want to have a nice lawn here in the Denver metro area.
3. Air – 1. Water, 2. Food, 3. Air.  Sounds a lot like everything we need to survive huh?  Imagine me covering your face with a roll of sod.  How long would it be before you turned blue, and passed out?  Haha!  Although that example is a bit extreme, this is what happens in our lawns.  Thick thatch layers, hard compact soils, and even standing water can all keep oxygen from reaching the root zone of your lawn making it very hard for your roots to breathe.  Core aeration, and wetting agents both help with this constant challenge.
